What I'm Seeing Now

Is This A Kitchen Cabinet Or A Slow Cooker?

Is this a kitchen cabinet or a slow cooker?

Chris Ann Cleland actually came up with that title.

While doing my typical thermal image sweep of this house I wondered why there was no HVAC register in the bathroom.

Well, there was one!  And thermal imaging is the perfect way to find it!

It was there, but had just been covered up by the floor tile!

While it might not have been providing much heat to the room, it did provide a good spot to dry wet socks.

Continuing the sweep Mighty Mo found something else.

When looking at the kitchen I noticed that the kitchen cabinet was sitting on top of the register there.

That would make for one comfortably warm kitchen cabinet!

Hence the title, is it a kitchen cabinet or a slow cooker?

Chris Ann was there and suggested that it might just work for slow cooking!

And even though insulated you can see that the tile floors, over a crawl space under this house, were chilly.  They will not improve during cold weather.

My recommendation:  sometimes thermal cameras reveal interesting things!  You never know what will be revealed.   In this case we found two rooms not sufficiently provided with heating or air conditioning.   It pays to have a Mighty Mo in your corner.  And an experienced thermographer!

That's crazy. Did the person installing the floor tiles not SEE the HVAC register? Geez

Good morning, Jay Markanich good title for those photos.... some of these subs may as well work with blinders on... they don't care!!

Good morning Jay. This would be too funny if not so sad! The tile guy should be cemented to a tree! Enjoy your day and more adventures with Mighty Mo!

Sham - every time I do an inspection now I think that.  This is not my first thermal image post of a covered register!

Kat - yes, but he was going to come back after lunch to cut the opening out.  Apparently he still has not had lunch.

Barbara - the bottom line!  And my big beef with the modern construction industry.  The listing agent came by and I showed him and he said he wondered why there was no register in the bathroom!

Wayne - to the right is the original Mighty Mo, the big hamburger offered by the Marriott's Hot Shoppe's Restaurant in the 50s.  A great childhood memory, long before the Big Mac and Whopper.  Girls in skirts and roller skates brought them to the car.  Good times.

Slow cooker, bread warmer...the uses are many.  Billy Jay might need to do a commercial about this one.

Another great job by the 7-11 sub contractors!

I'm glad you enjoyed it, Golden 1!

Chris Ann - Billy Jays would come up with a few more uses!  Fer sher.

Fred - hard to know!  But if it wasn't them it was the same quality installer picked up at the bar.

That must have been one sloppy remodel and it seems like it could become dangerous.

Joe - or if the kids are late to dinner you can put the plates in there to keep them warm!

Sloppy remodel indeed...

Ha, S&D!  The creativity of the remodeler will never end.  And if you wanted to warm up your socks in the morning, what better place than the kitchen floor?
