What I'm Seeing Now

New Carpeting And Old HVAC Floor Registers

This house had new carpeting and old HVAC registers.

Now, when you put carpeting into a house it's a good idea to accommodate for the HVAC floor registers, cutting holes perhaps, and allowing air flow.

Did that come off as sarcastic?

So, when we walked into this bedroom I looked under the window to see this.  And the room felt kind of warm.

Immediately I knew what was missing.

But I asked my clients.

They carefully looked around the room, and could come up with nothing.

They were barefooted and I asked them to stand in front of the window.

They could both feel the hole in the floor under the carpeting, and that the carpet felt cold.

Of course that brought big smiles!

Breaking out Mighty Mo I was able to show them what a thermal image of that spot would look like.

And there it is!

It's not that we needed the thermal image to prove anything, because it doesn't.

But it brings the carpeted hole in the floor to life!

A thermal image definitively defines the problem so it can be seen and not simply felt.

Showing them the other bedrooms and how the floor registers should look with the new carpeting, they saw what was needed here.

My recommendation:  you never know what you will get on a home inspection!  Certainly a nice sales feature of this house was the new carpeting, which was well done throughout.  But a slight snafu in this room was caught.  Moving into the house they would have found the problem eventually.  But I saw it right away and they were impressed.  Well, I've done this home inspection thing a couple of days!

LOL that is dumb.  What was the installer thinking?  That's not the way we install carpet.

I saw new carpeting on the walls once, Debbie.  Is that how you do it?

Good morning Jay. Bottom line, the installer was not thinking! Thinking costs extra! Enjoy your day!

Dorie - they were going to get back to it after lunch.  And forgot.

And expensive Wayne!  at least I think so, anyway.

Maybe the carpet was so comfy they slept on the job, Fred.  Or the carpet company name was Sonambulation, LLC.

He kind of sealed the deal this time, Robert.  The young lady already knew the hole was there!
