"The Drippen," by Edgar Jay Markanich (A Sad Tale Of Gutter Drip Woes)

Once upon a midday dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of someone gently rapping, dripping on the front porch floor.
“’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “dripping on the front porch floor —
            Only this and nothing more.”

    Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak September;
And each separate dying dripper wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow — sadly I had to report the sorrow,
On my long report to borrow—terse words for the poor Sellor —
For the rare and radiant listing, whom the MLS calls Sellor —
            Nameless here for evermore.

And the drippen very certain, reported later most determined,
Thrilled me—filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before;
So that now, to still my client's beating, I simply stood again repeating,
“’Tis some visitor dripping on the front porch floor —
Some late visitor dripping on the front porch floor —
This it is and nothing more.”

As we used to say in the playground - gutter, gutter, boo, boo!  And then we stuck our tongues out.

My recommendation:  look up, look down, look all around - the gutter's dripping down!  Or something like that.  Whenever you see a wet stain, there is always a source.  And while some gutter leaks may wax poetic, they are pretty common for home inspectors to see.  Perhaps the future will see this seller sealing the fate of the gutter.  We'll wait and see.  Only this, and nothing more.

Sorry folks.  The first time I posted this it came out blank.

A new application of "poetic justice" ....there never seems to be any or water in the wrong and destructive place.

This was not an unknown problem, S&D, and the fix is not hard.  A tad high, maybe.

Good Saturday morning Jay. Seams to me that the installer used subpar materials on the corners and end caps. Or is that seems. I get so confused this time of the morning.

Seams right to me Michael.

Seams it's drippen.

You'd make EAP proud.  I bet in the winter there is a little ice mound there, too.

Hmmm, Debbie - perhaps time for the sad tale, "The Mounden?"

Jay- water water everywhere, and not a drop to drink!

Well done! Never more...evermore!

Kathy - you are a poet and now I know it.

Good morning Jay,

Reminds me of the commercial of some aerosol spray that will even fic a leaking boat!

Make yourself a great day.

Posted by Raymond E. Camp, Licensed Real Estate Salesperson Greater Rochester (Howard Hanna Real Estate Services) about 4 years ago

Interesting how you can find poetry on line and change it a bit Wayne.  Mr. Poe is one of my wife's fave poets/authors.

Gracias Hermana Barbara.  That's Spanish for Barbara.

That guy has a big mouth two ways, Raymond.  Sometimes they show him spraying that crap on the OUTSIDE of a metal gutter - not sure what that is going to do!

Seam-less is a thought that comes to mind old chap!

Rain is so rare here that we don't have to worry bout gutters or downspouts. Very clever post Jay!

Edgar Jay has implemented his trochaic octameter form here whereas Jay Edgar is the more familiar style I read. Will your customers be expecting this writing method in their reports? It cannot have been a simple task, very well done!

This is a good reminder for home owners. Now is a good time to take a close look at your gutters.

Fred - that's two tight curves in a row!

Nicole - I have K-Guard covers on mine and they are truly carefree.

Kevin - was EAP's trochaic style before or after the Jurassic?  And thanks!

It's never a bad time, probably, Roy!

Thank you Doug.  It was truly fun!

Kevin J. May Yea, if we wafted poetic in our inspection reports, you may never get your buyer to the settlement table...As it is the reports just seem to get longer and longer.  This was great Jay Markanich !

Posted by Donald A. Masters (Master Home & Building Inspections, LLC) about 4 years ago

Thanks again, Kathy.  I thought you'd enjoy this one, with one or two eyes.

Donald - they would surely take a long while!  And I'm glad you liked this one!

Ah, Jay, such well-written prose! See, you're not just a pretty face with naught behind it!

Thank you Gayle.

A pretty face?  When my daughter was 15 she saw an eight-grade photo of me and said, "Wow, dad, you were hot!"

Key word - were.

Never thought about it.

Wait, look there!  I am hot!

How fun. I love reading Poe - only wish I could memorize more than a couple of lines. Maybe I should work on that - brain exercises, you know.

Posted by Marte Cliff, Your real estate writer (Marte Cliff Copywriting) about 4 years ago

Jay - waxing poetic makes the point.  Thanks for the humor with teachable moment.

Marte - memorization is a very good brain technique!  It isn't easy, but once there things seem to stay there.

Thanks Grant.  I had some fun with this one.

And Thanks Alaska B.!  I don't think I've been featured there before.

Jay Markanich you are in a great mood - feels so good!

(I don't know how to do poetry.....oops!)

I heard from my inspector that builders discourage gutters for new construction. Many had lead to ice-dams last winter.

Posted by Praful Thakkar, Andover, MA: Andover Luxury Homes For Sale (LAER Realty Partners) about 4 years ago

Thanks Praful.

P.s.  Gutters don't lead to ice dams.  That is not ice dam understanding.

Seal it up and say Nevermore.

Posted by Stephen Weakley (Nationwide Mortgage Services) about 4 years ago

That's probably what Edgar Allan would have said, Stephen.

Posted by Jay Markanich, Home Inspector - servicing all Northern Virginia (Jay Markanich Real Estate Inspections, LLC) about 4 years ago

Jay Markanich The only Poe I like is Annabelle Lee. And I don't like dripping gutters, either. Too horrible.

Bill Roberts

A poetry to every homeowner's ears. Drip, drop, where are thou coming from? Let Jay Markanich point it out to you.

Posted by Les & Sarah Oswald, Broker, Realtor and Investor (Realty One Group) about 4 years ago

That is a very dear poem Bill.  My wife loves Poe, so we have the entire collection.  Edgar Allan never wrote about the dripping gutter though.

Thank you L&S.  This was a lot of fun.

I am not much into poetry but I followed the drip of that storyline!  Well done!
