What I'm Seeing Now

The Culprit - And The Result

This is the story of the culprit - and the result.

Culprit - noun - the cause of a problem or defect.  From the old French word culpable, meaning 'guilty.'

Walking up to the house there was a brick sidewalk in front and leading around the garage to a side door.

It was cracked in many places, from settlement.

There was an extra smoosh of mortar in the gap between the sidewalk and step.

And the sidewalk was inclining toward the house.

It had inclined since that smoosh of mortar, put there, ostensibly, to fill the gap from previous movement.

Why that extra mortar?

My guess - a wet basement!

Good Monday morning Jay. As inspectors, we always have the on the lookout for what is not so obvious.

In economics, they would call that sidewalk a "leading indicator," Michael.

I was looking up some of your articles last night when I was at my parents.  We were having dinner outside and my sister-in-law saw a big weed growing in one of the gutters.  My brother got it out.  I told them they need to have the gutters cleaned and that's the issue.  I knew that because of some of your posts I had read.

Thank you Debbie.  That would be another leading indicator.

UNLESS, OF COURSE, they had purchased Billy Jays  fine product Get Yer Gutter Garden!

It's out there, it's popular, and I'm not sure why anyone would throw the product away.

I'm kidding, of course.

You looked up!  I have had that post a few times too!

Smushes and swooshes usually have reasons other than "aesthetics" :)

Jay Markanich This is where your experience is invaluable. You note the telltale signs of a problem and follow through. Good post!

Good morning Jay.  You need to get your Sherlock cap on with a magnifying glass and post the picture.

Posted by James Dray, Exceptional Agents, Outstanding Results (Fathom Realty AR LLC) about 3 years ago

You are correct, S&D, no aesthetics here.

S&N - we talked about the basement moisture possibility before we went into the house.

James - my logo has a magnifying glass on it...

Jay, that is why it pays to get a home inspection. Most miss what the inspectors do not! Enjoy your day!

Jay, you always share what most of us might miss...the inspector Clousseau of Inspections.

Wayne - some things are seen in advance.

Ginny - my favorite Clousseau line, "The delivery many brought a bomb.  Were you expecting one?"

Good morning, Jay Markanich why would anyone pitch a sidewalk toward the house.... that walkway is a future redo!!

Posted by Barbara Todaro, "Franklin MA Homes" (RE/MAX Executive Realty ) about 3 years ago

Good morning Jay. I love your title and the post does it proud. Just had trees cut away from my home and removed plants that were too close too.

It wasn't originally Barbara.  Poor foundation and grading, and it has sunk over the years.

Sheila - all good ideas!  And thanks!

And you saw it right away as you approachd the stairs... sometimes I wish I could "turn it off" so to speak. I was at some friends house the other day and they had this horribly patched drywall crack I couldn't stop looking at...lol, I made myself bite my lip. It's a curse I say!

I was at someone's house yesterday and told them their smoke detectors were too old, how to permanently repair their nail pops and how to clean the algae off the roof Fred.

Jay, That is called a Lean-to. Lean to home, wet in basement

Posted by Donald Hester, NCW Home Inspections, LLC (NCW Home Inspections, LLC) about 3 years ago

I've spent nights outside in lean toos Don, and the purpose was to divert water off where I was sleeping.

Seems to work here too.

Hope all has improved on the home front.  And that everyone stocked up on hoses.
