What I'm Seeing Now

Should The Washington Redskins Change Their Name?

Consider this:  should the Washington Redskins change their name?

Or, better stated, should the Washington Redskins be forced  by the language police to change their name?  We have all heard of the movement, proposed by a very small percentage of people, that when considered under the dark shroud of racism the word "Redskin" is offensive and degrading.

Racist?  Degrading?

History says that Boston, Massachusetts was originally awarded a football team in 1932, under the ownership of one George Preston Marshall.  Originally the team simply took the name of the landlords of the stadium in which they played, the baseball team called the Boston Braves.  The team became the football Boston Braves.

But sliding across town to play in Fenway Park the following year Marshall decided to change the name to the Boston Redskins at the urging of the team's coach, Lone Star Dietz.  Coach Dietz claimed to be part Souix Indian, although that heritage has been challenged.  Nonetheless, it was Dietz who proposed the name and it was changed in his honor.

Moving to Washington DC in 1937 the name stuck.  The team became The Washington Redskins.

In light of current protests decrying "racism" as regards the Redskins name, why has nobody similarly protested the name of the state of Oklahoma?

The word Oklahoma is a compound word in the Choctaw Indian language.

It is composed of two Choctaw words:

okla - meaning "people"

and

humma - meaning "red."

Oklahoma means "red people."

How did it get that name?

In 1866, during negotiations with the federal government regarding the use of the Indian Territory, the Choctaw Chief Allen Wright suggested the name Oklahoma.  As chief his vision was an all-Indian state.  It would be controlled by the federal government, but it would be preserved and protected as an Indian entitlement.

The equivalent to the English word Indian is the Choctaw phrase okla humma, which Chief Allen Wright said described the whole Native American race "as a whole."  His wish was granted in 1890.  Later, he wanted the Choctaw capital seat to be called "Tuskahoma," meaning "red warrior."  That wish was granted too.

Oklahoma later became the name of the Oklahoma Territory when it was opened up to the "Sooners" in 1892 for white settlement.  Later, when the Territory became the 46th state in 1907, the name Oklahoma remained.

Chief Allen Wright wanted the name of the area to glorify  the Red People as a whole.  He was not being racist!  He was feeling pride!

What is another word for Red People?  Might one suggestion be Redskin?

So, if an American Indian chief wants "red people"  to glorify the Native American race of people, and has, at his request, a territory and then state named Oklahoma in that honor, the use of the word Redskin, essentially the same word, simply cannot be racist.

It is the opposite!  Chief Allen Wright would say it glorifies!  It is proud!

Come on over to my house, we'll sit on my deck and bite off a chaw of Red Man chewin' tobacky (shouldn't it be called Oklahoma Chewing Tobacco?), and chew on this NEW controversy of

why a state is named after a football team!

Says he, with a twinkle in his eye...

Hi Jay,

No and NO. The name should stay. If anything it brings to light a little more we still have our Redskin citizens that are the only true native Americans.

Have a good day in Bristow.

And, as the post states, NOT racist.

These type of protests have been going on for 30+ years.  They can also threaten to change the name of the Cleveland Indians, the Atlanta Braves, and the Florida State Seminoles.  And what about other derogatories like the NY Yankees, the Minnesota Vikings, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Using anecdotal quotes is tricky, but using 150 year old quotes is downright implausible to justify anything. What was common language in the 19th century may not be acceptable today...and I can think of several racial or ethnic epitaphs that would be perfect examples.

Posted by Karl Hess, on The Jersey Shore (Keller Williams Shore Properties) about 5 years ago

Language, its meanings, and appropriateness always morph over times and the social mores of one time will not always be acceptable at other times.  It is way easier to take a cat out of a bag than it is to put one back in.

Posted by Charles Buell, Seattle Home Inspector (Charles Buell Inspections Inc.) about 5 years ago

I'm with Lenn - someone is making some bucks. The first ones who come to mind are the people who supply all that "branded" merchandise.

Meanwhile, I think all this is idiotic, dreamed up by some airhead who has nothing better to do than find a reason to be offended.

I agree with you that it should be viewed as an honor, not a degredation.

Schools in Idaho are going through the same thing - some small contingent of people screaming because the school names are "racist." But that's not all - fish and game had to change the name of a Squawfish - I forget what it's called now.

If you look at most team names they denote something of strength and power - I don't see that as degrading at all.

Ha! Something just occurred to me. Maybe it's the people doing the hollering who are the true racists - because they don't want their kids attending a school with an Indian name.

This politically correct B.S. is way out of control.  Call a black person the N word and we are racist.  Let the blacks call whites a cracker or honkie and it is their right.  What the hell kind of logic is that?  Somewhere it needs to stop.  I'm not saying any of it is right but you get the idea.

How about the Washington Oklahomas, Karl?  It's Redskins because that's what Coach Lone Star wanted to call the team.  Is White Sox offensive to non whites?  Or Red Sox offensive to whites?  Oh, a "man-hole cover" might offend females who might work under the street!  Again, I laugh at the nonsense.

When the Lenape were here they weren't native Americans.  They were just natives.  Oh, no!!

I have a good friend who is pure Hopi and another pure Seneca and they laugh at all this as we have watched Redskin games.

It's always one way too Fred.  They couldn't care less that I am disgusted by being called a "gun nut," or disgusted by the word "gay."

The Hopi hates the term "native American."  He says it makes him sound less than civilized!  "I'm no native!"  He's joking of course, but he makes his point.

Posted by Jay Markanich, Home Inspector - servicing all Northern Virginia (Jay Markanich Real Estate Inspections, LLC) about 5 years ago

There's a difference between Choctaw Indian words which translate as red people (Oklahoma) in 1541 and modern usage of the word 'redskin.'

If you look up the word "Redskin" in the dictionary, it's defined simply as, "Used as a disparaging term for a Native American." This isn't even really debatable, the name is offensive not because of any sort of allusion or interpretation (such as Blackhawk, Seminole, etc) -- it's defined as a racial slur.

Posted by Karl Hess, on The Jersey Shore (Keller Williams Shore Properties) about 5 years ago

Karl - I, I, I suggested that the words are synonyms!  My Oxford dictionary, over my desk, published circa 2000, defines redskin as "an American Indian."  So does my Webster's circa 1966.

Perhaps the more modern, sensitive, politically-correct, edition changes that.  Neither of my American Indian friends consider the word disparaging - why do you?

Do you want me to answer that?  Because I can.  You are in the VAST minority, of course, but you persist.  It's silly Karl!  People really, really don't care.

And if, as you say, Blackhawk or Seminole aren't racial, why do people of your ilk want to change them?

Come on over and we'll bit off a chaw, as I suggest in the post, and we can talk.  As you know, I would really like that.  What was the name of that tobacco brand again?

With so many things to do and think about it in the world, I'm disgusted with the people who spend their time thinking up reasons to be insulted and offended - and even more disgusted with those who spend their time thinking up reasons why someone else should be insulted and offended.

I'd like to say to all of them "Get over yourself. Go do something useful."

Posted by Fred Hernden, CMI, Albuquerque area Master Inspector (Superior Home Inspections - Greater Albuquerque Area) about 5 years ago

It's so silly Marte.  With all the really, really serious crap going on now, with so much falling apart, people are really worried about this?  If perceived offense to a small minority is all it takes to get something changed, what in the world would stay the same?

Fred - that's a double negative and improper grammar.  Sister Mary Catherine would smack your knuckles good with a ruler!

How about America's True Team!

Posted by Jay Markanich, Home Inspector - servicing all Northern Virginia (Jay Markanich Real Estate Inspections, LLC) about 5 years ago

Jay - We do have many more serious things to worry about. One of them is the failure of schools to educate children.

It's a bit stupid to worry about the name of the school sports team when the kids aren't learning to read or write - or do enough math to balance a checkbook.

Posted by Marte Cliff, your real estate writer (Marte Cliff Copywriting) about 5 years ago

My free enterprise quote today was used to develop a very serious discussion on some of today's problems Marte.  Nobody is paying attention, it seems.

The education system is part of the plan.  I did an education dissertation on that 23 years ago, and they thought I was nuts.  Now they realize I was not!

And the other day I heard Howard Dean (devoid of reality) blame Detroit's problems on George Bush!

Posted by Jay Markanich, Home Inspector - servicing all Northern Virginia (Jay Markanich Real Estate Inspections, LLC) about 5 years ago

Well of course! Everything is George Bush's fault - just ask Obama.

But of course, it is to some people's benefit to raise an entire generation that can't think. Just "sheeple," dependent on the system for their very survival.

What boggles my mind is when people who actually work for their money support that administration and all it stands for.

Posted by Marte Cliff, your real estate writer (Marte Cliff Copywriting) about 5 years ago

Honestly Marte?  I am way out there.  Ayn Rand probably had it right with the idea that the skilled, conservative producers will go somewhere they can band together.  With the revelation that 102 mil are taking from the gubment and 96 mil are working to provide that was a frightful one.  It really will get to the point where producers, one by one, will not care to provide any more.  What would be the point?  So what will they do?

It might already be happening, with the apparently huge emigration of brain talent from the US.  They aren't all going somewhere to be together, for sure, but they see the writing on the wall here!  I actually looked into Costa Rica.  My skills aren't in too much demand there, but the gringo population is huge.  And from America.

"Common language" means the thought police (liberals) don't approve.

Don't look at history and find out how a name was choosen, just assume it is offensive and demand a change. Where are the protests? Why isn't the team losing money? How come the games are all sold out if it is offensive?

I am rimended of a Tim McGraw song, something about a Cherokee Indian..... When it first came out a tribal leader found it offensive and demanded it not be played and tribe told her to shut up and sit down. She was voted out or resigned over the issue.

My point? You can't make everything not offensive to someone (of course it is okay to offend whites and Christians, since they don't count and are or have done evil in the past).
