What I'm Seeing Now

A House Full Of Kids Needs An Extra Fridge In The Basement

This family has lots of kids and an unfinished basement that is partially finished as an ice hockey rink!  And, as we all know, a house full of kids needs an extra fridge in the basement.

And there it is.  Sitting there just beside the penalty area.

It's full of sodas and water and treats for the kids.

Ice hockey makes you thirsty!  And hungry!

See how it's plugged in on the side?  Right there to the left.

Can't see it too clearly?

There it is, in the left photo, a little more close up.

Just kind of hanging there.

You might think it's a little disappointing.

But really they were thinking ahead!

Kids have a tendency to play with things.

And plug and unplug things.

Well, at least the "installer" took the time to make it safe for the kids to use.

Yes, safe!*

How can you tell it's safe?

By looking at the receptacle!

It's completely encased with electrical tape!

That makes it safe, dontcha know!

That way, if and when sweaty kids, waiting to get a drink, play with the receptacle, they don't get zapped!

This really is convenient.  Everyone is happy!

In the panel box they simply double tapped another circuit.

Brought this yellow (20amp) wired directly out of the side of the panel box cover.

Ran it behind the "wall" they created for the hockey rink.

And coiled the wire to "hang" the receptacle at a convenient height!

Easy peasy!

And to make it safe to touch ... viola!

We have electrical tape!

I'm thinking my buyers might want to yank that little guy from the panel box!

Or maybe ask the sellers to do it when they leave ...

When they take the fridge with them ...

And the receptacle ...

And the wiring ...

My recommendation:  look around!  You never know what might be hanging around a basement with a hockey rink!

* Tongue in cheek, to be sure.  Everything about this installation is crazy.

What thoughtful parents they are! One could only wish that they had parents as safety conscious as they are. They could have went overboard and added a little duct tape to that electrical tape and they would have gotten an award!

Funny, I found a similar set up for an in wall A/C unit yesterday. Uncle Bob is universal!

Fred - my mother simply said, "Don't stick anything into that plug."  I did anyway, which probably explains a lot.  I have no idea what you are saying.  These guys are very safety conscious.

Jim - alive and well.  I didn't meet the sellers, but I think his name may have been Robert ... no, maybe not.  I don't remember.

Hi Jay,

At least they had enough sense to tape the recpt up. Many are not. I find this stuff all the time. Even under sinks with a leaking drain, YOWSER!

Have a good day in Bristow.

Good morning, Jay....of all the phases of a home to fool with, why do people do such dangerous things with the electrical system..... call an electrician and do it to code.... the life you save may be your own child's life!!  and you can't blame this on the custom builder!!!

Had one of those just this morning Clint!

Barbara - this was a "custom homeowner!"  Or his uncle...

Jay -- that is amazing that they couldn't find a recepticle box to put that into, and keep it solidly attached to the post.  What interesting things you find!

Jay - that's an accident just waiting to happen. I can't understand how the owners could think that set up is ok.

Steven - this was a dope installation from the start.  Why look for a box?

Tom - I had to put that disclaimer in there because often people don't recognize my sarcasm!

Eric - it had been there for a while too!  They had lots of kids - so if only one or two touch it they have others.

Don - "Chapter 2 - Electricity - the Shocking Facts."

Debbie - this is more common than you think!

Always read to the end James!  The last line is important!
