What I'm Seeing Now

This Would Bug Me Every Day When I Got Home

If I bought a house in just the right neighborhood with just the right lot, and razed the house to built a new custom home on the spot, this would bug me every day when I got home.

Returning home every day you could not avoid seeing both of these things.

The photo on the left is the house number.  The grouping is not centered on the front facade of the front porch roof.  Only one number is level.  The numbers are not spaced attractively.

The light fixture on the right is beside the garage door.  I noticed it as soon as I pulled into the driveway.  The fixture is 20" from top to bottom and not close to plumb.  Worse, the base is literally glued to the wall with a very thick bead of silicone caulking.  Straightening it will take some work!

My recommendation:  when one spends over a million dollars for a custom home, the little things should be as attractive as the big things!  This is a gorgeous house.  It's not without its issues, but gorgeous nonetheless.  It might seem picky to identify such things as these, but for me, this would bug me every day when I got home!

OMG, that would annoy me too!  I would be going crazy.  That work is just plain sloppy.  I could even do a better job.

Hi Jay,

The home actually has numbers on it? Here there are a very large amount of home without any addresses on the home.

I hate that. What if there was an emergency? How would the ambulance find the home quickly?

Straighten out the number before it falls off completely. That would be very annoying to me as well.

Have a great day and week in Bristow.

Best, Clint McKie

Good morning Jay. It is already bothering me and I have only seem the pic. How anyone can pull in that drive everyday and NOT go crazy is beyond me.

Clint - here emergency services requires numbers on the homes - not just on po boxes at the street either, on the house and visible.  I had a post about it a couple of years ago.

Randy - well, it may seem small, but a small pin prick every day does damage over time!

Jay, Those things would bother me too, ESPECIALLY if I'd paid that kind of coin for the home.  Just some attention to detail....and if they're that sloppy on visible stuff, makes me question how they handled the not so readily visible items.

My comments to them exactly Bliz! And the "coin" is not barely over a million - well over!

Good morning, Jay.... if something so obvious is sooo wrong, I would be concerned that other major and less obvious systems would have problems too....

picky, picky, picky or sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. I like the angle light. Caulk, doesn't that make it okay?

Posted by James Quarello, Connecticut Home Inspector (JRV Home Inspection Services, LLC) almost 6 years ago

Annoying is right. The spaces between the quoin corners also look to be out of level, which would also bug me.

That would drive me to distraction... seriously.... and it is. Can you please let me know when it is all fixed? That is like someone having their shirt buttoned wrong, or a crooked picture... I CAN'T STAND IT.

Thanks....

Squint your eyes and cock your head, it goes away Jay.   :)

Seriously, that would bug me too.

That is just inexcusable.  You would think that a builder for a house with that price tag would have more pride in workmanship.

Maybe they saved a few dollars and hung the numbers themselves. It never ceased to amaze me where people would try to save a few dollars on a custom home.

That number would drive me crazy! The light would also, but that number wouldn't make the day...lol. Actually, all three of them are crooked. Geeze!

Jay -- as Bliz (#6) put it, if they are that sloppy with things that are so visible, what kind of workmanship did they use on the stuff that isn't seen?

Posted by Steven Cook (No Longer Processing Mortgages.) almost 6 years ago

Barbara - the house had a bunch of things.  Some may very well be hidden!

Jim - that light would last about two days before I hacked it off the wall and reinstalled it!  Caulk makes it more waterproof, but that's all...

Jeff - those are pieces of synthetic stucco glued onto the brick!  Not very attractive in my opinion and a lousy way to try to get that effect.

Andrea - how about the guy who has not trimmed his eyebrows in 20 years?

Posted by Jay Markanich, Home Inspector - servicing all Northern Virginia (Jay Markanich Real Estate Inspections, LLC) almost 6 years ago

Wow, Tom!  It works!

Kathryn - what you say?

Than - the buyers didn't.  They are in Seattle!

Fred - there were many more cosmetic things.  But man, these two really bugged me!

Steven - some of it the same.  Post tomorrow!

Hi Jay, Doesn't it make you wonder how the builder could not notice these things before he turned the house over. When the obvious is out of sync, I have to wonder what is going on under the exterior. Guess you will know one day, :-)

Morning Jay red flags would be going off like popcorn.  I agree if they miss the small stuff as your photos indicate wheat else did they not do right.  I may walk away from this one if I were the buyer.

BOTH of these would drive me crazy and I'd have to fix them...maybe that is why I am a property manager

Posted by Wallace S. Gibson, CPM, LandlordWhisperer (Gibson Management Group, Ltd.) almost 6 years ago

William - these weren't the only things!  Just the two that a homeowner can't avoid seeing every time he pulls up to the house!

James - I had a little fun with this one, but still, it is indicative of uncaring work.

Wallace - me too!  That stuff would not last two days.  I don't need that daily stress!

Hi Jay.  Too funny.  As Clint said "at least is has a number".

That wouldn't bug me every day when I got home. I'd have to fix it the minute I saw it ;-)

It wouldn't last long on my house Reubs.  And this is a "custom" builder.
