What I'm Seeing Now

My Smart Phone Has Changed How I Do Most Everything

It is certainly true - my smart phone has changed how I do most everything.

The biggest advantage to my phone is that I can have everything I need at my fingertips and a lot of it can be synced with my car.  So my car, together with my phone, has truly become a mobile office.

With the car synced with my phone I can dial anyone linked to my phone.  I do so verbally.  Therefore, I link to everybody I can.
With the car synced with my phone I can text anyone linked to my phone.  I do so verbally.  Therefore, I link to everybody I can.
With the car synced with my phone I can pull over and while I am speaking with any client, I can pull up their report and look at it as we speak.  I do so verbally.
With the car synced with my phone I can bring up my Facebook account and see how my latest post is received.
With the car synced with my phone I can do the same with my LinkedIn account, my website and my various blogs.

While I can't do the last three things verbally, I can do them in the car - BECAUSE IT IS SYNCED WITH MY PHONE!

And I can do it all quickly!

I can do most everything with my phone that I can do with my computer.  It has been a learning curve, to be sure, but I have done it.

Outside of business I can do a lot of my personal stuff in the same way!

Everyone at church, that is everyone, is also linked to my phone.  I can call them while in my car, or at home.  So I no longer have a need of church directories!  I can email them, text them, or simply call them, all verbally.

There are groups at church that I might want to contact en masse.  I can do that too.  I have those groups on my phone.  Again, this is better than a directory!  Directories don't organize groups for me!

What's best about all this?  Everything above will automatically update if I ask my phone to do it for me.  And it will scan any updates for viruses or other problems!  Automatically.  And I can ask it to do specific things by just pushing a button and it will update them too.  Automatically.

And I can do this from the ground or, if I choose, from the cloud!  Some of my stuff in in the clouds!  And I can go there.  I have never been in the clouds before!

My kids tried for some time to get me to think about and then go with a smart phone.  They said it would change my life.  I resisted, in the interest of simplicity.  Simplicity is good!

BUT IN TODAY'S BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT, WITH THE RAPIDITY OF NEED FOR INFORMATION OR CONTACT, I HAVE FOUND THAT MY CHILDREN WERE RIGHT!  I NEED TO BE CONNECTED, AND OFTEN CONNECTED NOW.  I NEED INFORMATION, AND OFTEN THAT INFORMATION NOW.  I NEED TO SEND STUFF, AND OFTEN TO SEND IT NOW.  HAVING ONE HAS, IN FACT, CHANGED MY LIFE.

So I have found my smart phone to be an essential partner in my business.  That is good and that is bad.  It is good for all the good reasons stated here.  It is bad because, wow, if I lose that little fellow, there would be a WHOLE LOT of information I would have to reacquire!

My smart phone is really smart.  It is smarter than I am.  I like my phone.

Amzing isn't it. I can still remember my first cell phone. It was a Motorola and had a battery the size of a car battery. Where is Motorola today?????

Looks like we have similar phones Jay.  I couldn't agree more about the abilities of today's phones.

Bill - my wife uses my old cell phone!  On our network, but the old phone!

Gabe - glad you like the post.  I think they are wonderful.

I have a dumb phone. I haven't seen the need to be that connected. Does your vehicle have a computer or is that a tablet you cart along with you?

Posted by James Quarello, Connecticut Home Inspector (JRV Home Inspection Services, LLC) almost 7 years ago

Jim - Ford has a sync program that came with the car.  It was part of the featurs.  I drive an Escape, not the whoopdi do car.  It was all in the features package.  I also can answer my phone with a button on the steering wheel and talk to the dashboard.  It's really convenient.  The computer in the car is smarter than I am too.

You're so smart.

A freind of mine has a Ford pu with that sync feature he uses with his phone. He's a pretty low tech guy, so that is as far as he uses it.

Thanks Lenn.  But I'm no where as smart as my phone!

They actually set it up for me at the dealership the night I bought the car Jim.  It is just pushing buttons.

It is amazing what you can do with this small mini computer that we call a smart phone.  I remember the first "portable" computer I used....it weighed 30 pounds at least and could do word processing.  That was about it!

I find it fun and very important Kathryn.  And it's growing in importance.

Good morning Jay,

I too am a big fan of my smart phone - it's an amazing tool and time saver...or, sanity saver!

I wish I was half as smart as my phone---no that "smarts"

Posted by Charles Buell, Seattle Home Inspector (Charles Buell Inspections Inc.) almost 7 years ago

It truly is Lisa.  And I have become a fan.  I didn't believe it at first.

Charlie - is that new avatar you answering your fans' questions on the radio during your big-time radio show?  And I agree about the "smarts."

I'm with James.  I have a dumb phone also and it really, truely is all I need. I'm in Real Estate not Homeland Security.  I'm really not that important, nor do I think I am.

The phones are 'smart', cars and computers too, but it's YOU who are wise to use and take advantage of their capabilities.

it keeps me from having to freak out if i am away from my computer! yes my phone and "Dropbox" are by far and away my top tools.

Leslie - rapid connection to information is the new normal and while I fought it for a long time, now it serves my clients well.  Customer service is everything!  See my free enterprise blog yesterday!  It's a great story.

By the way, Leslie, there is nobody else on the earth like you.  That rarity makes you very, very important.  That, by the way, is the Greatest Secret In The World.  You are also a child of God, but that is another matter altogether!

Robert - it has been a learning curve, to be sure!  But I am getting better at it and my clients think I am wonderful!

All my reports are in Dropbox, Mark.  And I find that to be indispensible!

Great post! Smart phones have changed the way most of us do everything! Although it is mostly a great resource for Real Estate Agents, it has its drawbacks as well.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Jay, This made me chuckle because even though I grew up with technology I still do not use my phone as fully as I can.   One day I will find out my phone can put my pants on for me, or skirt if it  is Saturday night, just kiddin  ; ).

We have a car that syncs also but I thing the newer cars are more robust.

Posted by Donald Hester, NCW Home Inspections, LLC (NCW Home Inspections, LLC) almost 7 years ago

Everything has its drawbacks Jeffrey!  We have to weigh the costs and benefits!

Don - my car is 2010, so it is recent enough for the syncs that work with my phone.  Good thing!

You will like my free enterprise quote yesterday - great story!

Jay,

If you had written this post at the start of this technology update, many would have said "you're dreaming"... (another way of being in the clouds I guess). Today, I have to hand it to the kids who have adapted to and adopted to the latest technology far ahead of us. ENJOY!

My two boys have adopted and adapted, Brad, but not my daughter.  I thought they were dreaming too...

Good evening, Jay. I must say that my smart phone is smarter than I am. I think my next one will be a dumb phone; that way, I will look like the smart one...

Not to my knowledge, Ken, but I am still learning how to use the little puppy!

Michael - in a couple of years even what is considered a dumb phone will be smarter than both of us!

I love my smartphone, Jay.  It has saved me so many times, and it keeps me on track and makes sure I show up for appointments on time (most of the time).  I can't imagine doing back to anything less.

Good morning Jay with all that sync stuff how do you find time for working? ;~).  Enjoy the day sir and too much data for an old man

Posted by James Dray, Exceptional Agents, Outstanding Results (Fathom Realty AR LLC) almost 7 years ago

If I just get a couple of inspections per year because of my quick connection Mike, it is worth it!

James - sync speech is while I am in the car.  I can do everything from my steering wheel and simply talk to the dashboard.  But, the phone beeps me with different sounds when certain things happen.  It tells me to check!

Posted by Jay Markanich, Home Inspector - servicing all Northern Virginia (Jay Markanich Real Estate Inspections, LLC) almost 7 years ago

I LOVE love love  Bluetooth in the car  such a safer way to drive & talk !

Posted by Karen Ann Martin, Realtor Fall River Westport MA Real Estate Agent (Safe Harbor Realty ) over 6 years ago

I agree Karen!  Talking to my dashboard is not much different than talking to a partner in the car, except that my focus is always to the front!
