What I'm Seeing Now

Cherry Blossom Droppings

Cherry blossoms can last a few weeks and the trees remain glorious, unless, that is, there is rain!

When it rains the blossoms are released and the ground under and around the trees looks like it is covered with a blanket of pink snow.

Each cherry blossom has hundreds of petals!  Each puffy, pink spot is made up of dozens of blossoms!

So how many petals would be on the thousands and thousands of blossoms on each tree?

And when they fall, it really looks like pink snow.  It rained here the past couple of days.  That will knock off the blossoms, as I said.  Under this tree were the snowy blossoms with millions of petals left on the tree.  It is a beautiful sight!

I bet you will Inna.  We have loads of cherry blossoms around here, with whole neighborhoods filled with them.  Of course, downtown on the Mall is where the wave started!

Morning Jay this is a nice curve from your normal postings I like it.  Went to DC one year at the height of the season they were a sight to see

My sister's apt has camellia and cherry blossoms on the bath and in the yard and her pond...from her window, it looks like a carpet.

Those trees sure started a huge wave in the area James, at least throughout Northern VA.

Wallace - I have seen the bumper stickers - Petals Happen.

That's what you mean, right?

Thanks Donna.  Those are good kinds of droppings!  There is no scent though.

Another nice way to look at our beautiful cherry blossoms.

We have a similar effect from our Bradford Pear trees.  But cherry blossoms are much prettier!  Thanks for posting.

It is a different take, isn't it Margaret!  I thought it would make a different photo.

Kathryn - the road leading in to our neighborhood is full of Bradford Pears and it is similarly covered with their petals!  I was thinking of doing contrasting photos, but didn't want to have to drive out to the road!

Erv - I had to walk all the way across the yard!  Thanks.

Cherry blossom season is beautiful.  It just got cold here yesterday and I heard there is frost advisory for tonight - 30 degrees.  Ugghh.  Those poor confused plants.

What, no cherry blossom angels. They are beautiful.

Jay, the pink is so gorgeous this year. I cannot remember such a beautiful spring in Virignia!

Debbie - we always seem to get that late cold snap!  We don't expect that here, thankfully.

Jim - there are some areas where that could probably work!  This is under a tree in my yard, so that is mulch!

Peggy - this has been a glorious spring here, you are right!  The rain bopped off a lot of petals though.

And for those unlucky folks who didn't put their cars in a garage they have a lot of washing to do to get the petals unstuck from their windshield.

Good morning Jay,

What a lovely photo, our ground turns white in the Spring when the bradford pear trees shed their blossoms.

Thank you for sharing the photo with all of us. They are not dropping in Ct, as yet.

Our Bradford pears shed their blossoms too. Made it look like we had a light snow in areas.

They are sticky aren't they Cindy!?

Much of our neighborhood is white with Bradford Pear petals too Lisa.  See my comment #10.

Joe - well, any day now!  We are due for a cold snap tonight, but I don't know if that means more shedding of petals or not.

It's a pretty neat effect, huh Than?

Jay, did you petal your bike through those pedals?

Posted by Charles Buell, Seattle Home Inspector (Charles Buell Inspections Inc.) over 7 years ago

C'mon Charlie - you know me.  I pedaled through the tulips and tip toed through the petals.  Sheesh...

Hi Jay, The irony of seeing this in your post is uncanny. I received today a photo of near the same thiing from Back East. It looked like a carpet of flower petals so similar to your photo. Nicely done and facinating.
Posted by William Johnson, Retired Real Estate Professional (Retired) over 7 years ago

Great William!  I could have taken a broader photo of what it looks like under the trees.  It really is a bit like pink snow.  But looking around I thought the close up might be more fun.

And hey, it beats yellow snow...
