What I'm Seeing Now

Night Out

Often my daughter and I have daddy/daughter dates and a night out.

She loves to see the Harlem Globetrotters.  We have been a few times.

I'm not sure why!  It's the same routine, with lots of the same gags, that they did when I was her age!

Some things never grow old.

Of course, getting home after the game it is important to tell everyone about it.

These kinds of things have to be scheduled in!

I am such a party animal usually on a Friday or Saturday night I am working on reports until late.  Excitement, excitement, excitement!

Yesterday I had my reports done by 4 and off we went to the Patriot Center at George Mason University.  The Trotters played at 730.

Of course, we had to buy a ball.

Amazingly though, the Globetrotters all have fabulous routines of things they can do with these balls - misdirection, twists and turns, spins - all the tricks.

And the balls are very obedient!  The balls seem to know exactly what to do.  Well, at least for the Globetrotters!

For us, they are so much less obedient!  Getting those balls to obey us might just require a little more practice...

I remember seeing them almost 50 years ago when we lived in Greensboro, NC....the Trotters and the circus were big family events for my younger sister and I.  In the summer, we had less expensive outtings at drive-in movies...we played so hard before the movies, we were asleep in the back of the station wagon before the 2nd reel was on....

This special time that you spend with your daughter is very special and will be remembered long after you are gone. You are a great dad.

Thank you for sharing the post with all of us.

The circus is coming in early April, and she wants to go to that too Wallace.  We have been before!

Joe - we have a lot of dates!  She finds out about what is happening and then the plans get made.  Often the day before!

I have number two coming in June, Ken.  Early June, and I have suggested June 6 as the day to induce so the kid can be called "D-Day."  I'm not sure why, but I don't think they like the idea...

Jay,

I guess when you have a formula for success like the Globetrotters do...why change it? These guys are truly athletes as well as entertainers.

I agree Rich.  They are all fabulous, even the team that travels with them.  Last night they were the "International Elite" team!  Usually they are the Washington Generals.  But last night they played for the International Championship Trophy!

The Trotters thankfully pulled it out in the end to be the champs...

Jay - that is so great that you guys have these special times together.  Sounds like you have a great relationship and you are both very lucky.

Jay, seen them with my son a few times over the years, it's always entertaining. I like the gag of the one chasing the other with the pail of water then when he throws it on him towards the crowd, it's a bucket full of confetti! Gets them every time!

Have a great day!

As a kid I loved to watch the Globetrotters. My girls like to go to hockey games.

Hello Jay,

What fun, you brought back a great memory of my own seeing the Globetrotters with my Father...we did, however, have my big brother in tow as well...

Debbie - we go out when we can.  Of course, I get into trouble often, without even trying!

Fred - they always seem to throw that pail onto an old lady who has no idea it is coming and has not seen the gag in any of the past 80 years!

My brother and I loved them too Jim.  They like hockey!  Wow, that's great for girls.  Not something most take to!

Lisa - bummer the brother had to come along.  Oh, well...    ;>)

Jay -- thanks for updating with their opponents.  It makes it more meaningful to know who they were playing, whether their perpetual challengers, or a local group.

The International Elite were very good Steven!  Why, the Trotters didn't win until the last couple of seconds!  We were all sweating it, with the International Championship Trophy on the line and all...

Jay, you brought back some good memories.  I can remember seeing the Harlem Globetrotters in Maple Leaf Gardens more than forty years ago.  I will have to take Alec down the next time they are in town.

You won't see much new stuff Chris!  It's funny how the same old stuff, with a few twists, is still funny!

Jay- I haven't seen the Globetrotters in person but remember seeing them on television.  I love the idea of you and your daughter still having Daughter and Dad time together.  You're creating great memories for both of you.

Thanks Kathy!  Glad you enjoyed it!  We have dates often, and I hope she never grows out of them.  Well, until she gets married I guess...

Jay, creating these kinds of memories with our daughters is invaluable. I hope you go to sit courtside and either got soaked with water or with confetti. :)

Courtside was $350 per seat Cal!  We were about row 16, for only $61!  Just to one side of mid court!

Jay, that's great that you and your daughter still have those times out.  It will leave a lasting impression on her forever.  Good for you!

You are a special dad - that's wonderful, she will never forget it and you have done so much to make her feel special.  I am guessing you make your inspection clients feel special too.  :)

I think so too Mike.  Unfortunately, I have seen them so many times I could tell you the Globetrotters' whole routine.  Hasn't changed much in all these years!

Joy - everyone is special!  I am the guy who thinks the term VIP is a misnomer.  Some people might be better known than another, but no more special.

My thinking anyway!    ;>)
