Hi Jay,

Stopping the infiltration and exfiltration in foundation walls  is the name of the game.

Homeowners would be amazed by how much energy loss goes out the foundation walls.

Foam is the best way to decrease the energy losses.

A little foam goes a long way. Very good post.

Best, Clint mcKie

That is a historic home in Manassas, Clint, with the Civil War plaque and everything.  Can you imagine the Committee stopping by for their annual inspection and seeing foam?  Yikes!  That stuff isn't a very good outdoor product either, as the UV rays deteriorate it to powder!  But it sure made for a fun post!

Michael - Billy Jays has 31 products out on AR with this one!  Admittedly he hasn't been around much this year, but there are many out there!

Posted by Jay Markanich, Home Inspector - servicing all Northern Virginia (Jay Markanich Real Estate Inspections, LLC) over 6 years ago

Jay...LOL, that is a good one! And man o man, show Joe Handyman a product and he will run with it! He will even use it on his car!! There is a certain guy (inspector) on HGTV that loves the stuff too (I won't mention any names)

Hope you had a Merry Christmas!

That poly foam is the scourge of many a "repair" Fred.  And for foundations?

Posted by Jay Markanich, Home Inspector - servicing all Northern Virginia (Jay Markanich Real Estate Inspections, LLC) over 6 years ago

Now I need to order a few cases of that stuff, looks like it will work really well for what I have planned for its use. This is exactly what I have been looking for!

If I order 2 cases of Foam Yer Foundation, how many bottles of Wet Yer Whistle do I get? And do you have a special going on for today? And after Christmas sale perhaps?

Billy Jays, you are the BEST!

LOL, but really it is good to fill in those holes, stay hydrated.

Posted by David Popoff, Realtor®,SRS, Green ~ Fairfield County, Ct (DMK Real Estate ) over 6 years ago

Andrea - each case of dihydrogen monoxide has 24 bottles, and two orders gets you two cases.  Good luck with your projects!

David - that foundation was surely staying hydrated, actually both of them!

Alright, Jay, I've got to suggest that so everyone can get rid of that weak leaking foundation right now!  Excllent, and I wish it really was that simple.  Have a great week, and Happy New Year!

Billy Jays - You might consider marketing your foam as a replacement/alternative to mortar. Contractors/flippers could do their own foundation additions without having to call in a contractor, and having had a similar, but I'm sure inferior product on my hands I know it will stick to anything.

Billy Jay,

I'll Take two and could you throw in a can of caulk your crack with that?

Posted by Brad Gotham (Granite Peak Inspection, Inc. ) over 6 years ago

Jay -- you forgot the other intrusive group who love those foundation points of failure-- the rodents.  They just love to get in through those gaps and cracks.  But who do I get to crawl all around the exterior foundation in the crawl space (less than 2' clearance) to find and fill them?

Posted by Steven Cook (No Longer Processing Mortgages.) over 6 years ago

Billy, sign me up I'll take a case and sell it at the time of the inspection.

Client, "What can we do about all those holes in the stone foundation."

Me, "I'm glad you asked that.  For just xxx.xx you can have this can of Foam Yer Foundation".

No need to back out of any deals because of a crumbling foundation again.  Brilliant.

Don - I have permission to send this to you:

"We have never come out with a catalog, especially in advance.  Our marketing model is meeting the need once we find it.      Billy"

That there is one firm foundation Mike!  Nothing stronger than foam.

John - Billy would LOVE for this foam to replace mortar.  I for one am not optimistic.

Brad - again from Billy:

"I can send a couple of tubes of that with your order!  We always like to get the product out there.  But you have to call now.       Billy"

I didn't forget Steven.  That's Billy's product, not mine.  I would prefer mortar every time, but don't tell Billy I said that.  Thanks.

As to the clearance problem, I would recommend one or two of my 12 year old Boy Scouts, weight about 65 or 70 pounds.

Thanks Jack.  I think the product line is growing for a reason.

what does anyone need with old fashioned mortar when you have spray foam?

Posted by Charles Buell, Seattle Home Inspector (Charles Buell Inspections Inc.) over 6 years ago

A thousand and one uses, Charlie, and few of them correct!  But hey, Billy gets by pretty well!

I gave it a shot - it works!Foam insulation at foundation

Jay,  I asked a 30 year master carpenter what he thought about the Foam...  He said it was the worst product ever invented; stay away from it.

Great Blog, Great Photos, thanks for the laugh!

Reuben - Billy would be very, very proud!  It looks like you need some more - I'd call now.

Fred - the right stuff in the right application is good stuff, but most people don't do that!

Good morning James,

I love a good laugh, and your photos reminded me of several "foamed repairs" that I have seen by creative homeowners and repair professionals(?) alike.

Wishing you and yours a Very Happy New Year!

Thanks Lisa.  And same to you of course.  I see foam all the time, and not just at the ocean.

You know Jay I'll bet that stuff is cutting into the traditional caulk market.

Posted by Jack Gilleland (Home Inspection and Investor Services, Clayton) over 6 years ago

I think because they figured out how to make it minimally expansive Jack.  It does work well around windows and doors.  Inside anyway.

Posted by Jay Markanich, Home Inspector - servicing all Northern Virginia (Jay Markanich Real Estate Inspections, LLC) over 6 years ago

Jay - this post is right on the money the pictures and all. Really shows why an inspection is important. At the very least though, the owners were creative - lol

Eric - things like this might simply be the result of good marketing.  "Good for any surface..."
