We don't get many communications from the Young Man From Afghanistan. Not everywhere has a computer to sit down at to communicate!
This is how our recent email began: "I just got back to a base last night with internet. There are different types of bases out here: Camps, these are very big and hold thousands of people; Forward Operating Bases (FOBs), these hold hundreds of people; Combat Outposts (COPs), these hold less than 100 people; and Patrol Bases (PBs), that aren’t made to hold more than two dozen people. I like being a the PBs the best. They’re way far away from other Marines and embedded with the local populace."
At the PBs, which are all over, he moves around a lot. There is no electricity, running water, or any of what you and I would consider creature comforts. They eat MREs out of a bag. Of course, the PBs are the most dangerous places to be.
This is his fourth all-expense paid trip overseas. And there were photos. Here are a couple:
Drugs of course are a big source of income for the people of Afghanistan. This is a poppy garden.
Such gardens as this are all over the country.
Every village, and a lot of the countryside, has gardens carefully maintained by the locals.
Here is some heroine he found, processed from the poppies. It appears to be in a very raw, goopy state.
The Marines realize they can't save the world.
When they run across it they just throw it out.
He enjoys being embedded with the locals.
This photo suprised me some.
Do you notice where his service revolver is located? It's on his chest.
The butt is facing the young man to his right and within easy grabbing distance.
This photo demonstrates a real degree of trust, both the people for the Marines, and his trust for them.
